Mark O’Hara

Mark O’Hara is a figurative landscape artist based in Brisbane, Queensland, whose works are inspired by a combination of Australian land and seascapes, and urban scenes and structures. Mark is frequently drawn to scenes in which the interplay of light, and the hour of the day, has an effect on the mood and the presentation of the encompassing environment. While enjoying the integration of strong colour tones, he is often appealed by more muted palettes, particularly when conveying sentimental and thought-provoking feelings and ideas.

Primarily self-taught, Mark began sketching in his early childhood and credits his grandfather, who was also a painter, with developing his initial interest in art. He began working in oils later in 2017, after completing a short skills course where he was introduced to the application and joy of the medium. Mark has been a finalist in several Queensland art awards, including the Paddington Art Prize, the Redlands Art Awards and the Rotary Art Show.

  • Caloundra is a place I visit fairly regularly. Bullcock Beach is facing the top end of Bribie Island and is well known as a safe beach for young kids. I like the juxtaposition of beach, water, trees and man-made structures that make it an interesting place to look at.

  • A local park in the early morning. The drama of the light and shadows caught my attention.

  • When I come to a path to the beach it always starts a level of anticipation in me for what lies at the end. This path seemed to be drawing me in to get to the beach and the enjoyment that would happen there.

  • The walk from Rainbow Bay, past Snapper rocks, then to Point Danger on the border of Queensland and New South Wales is very scenic. The small bay between the two is beautiful, including the thick concrete wall that is a reminder of past activities.

  • I spotted a small boat coming towards port in the early evening. I was stuck by the purposeful motion of the boat moving across the choppy surface of the ocean.

  • When the sun lights up the sky at the beach, even if you cannot directly see the sunrise, it can be truly magical.

  • I arrived at the beach to see people lying on the beach, sunshine and waves rolling in past the headland. However, above the headland I could see dark clouds forming. So possibly the perfect beach day might be interrupted by rain.

  • On a trip to Killarney, at the edge of the Darling Downs, I noticed a hill that was bathed in magnificent afternoon light. This painting is my attempt to capture this.

  • Walking along the esplanade I often see pelicans using the rock groins built during the great depression. I am heartened by this example of where nature has adapted to manmade structures that replaced the original shoreline.
