  • A bounty of colour provides a playful summery image of Queenslander architecture in Brisbane avenues.

Brisbane's suburban streetscapes are often covered in the blossoms of purple Jacaranda flowers, Poinciana red and green, Yellow and Pink Penda Tree, Flame Trees and so many more. This painting pays reverence to the romance of the Queenslander house and the unique colours of Brisbane. The Brisbane City skyline across the top reveals a number of iconic structures; The Gabba, Kurilpa Bridge, Brisbane Wheel, City Hall and the Story Bridge.

All the Queenslanders in the Avenues show the variation in vintage, style and detail that these domestic dwellings hold. Always wanting the viewer to engage with my work on a physically close level, I hide small animals, birds and objects to be discovered amongst the confetti like foliage.

Confetti Avenues is a digital reworking of the original artwork titled, Brisbane Confetti With a Violet Blush (2020).

  • A depiction of the Brown Snake meandering through confetti.

The Brisbane River has long been called the Brown Snake because of its murky discolouration.  Due to urbanisation and dredging impacting its hydrology, it is unlikely to ever return to a blue colour. Despite this, the river is beloved by Brisbane residents and this painting celebrates its brown tones with a thin meandering line travelling from the river estuary at Moreton Bay, to the suburb of Fig Tree Pocket.

Abstract in its arial presentation, thousands of small colourful dot-like brush strokes embrace the brown snake as it is embraced by all who treasure its significance to Brisbane life.

  • Tugulawa (tuh-goo-la-wa) is an indigenous word, meaning 'place of the heart'. It is believed to refer to the heart shaped bend in the Brisbane River surrounding our suburb, or maybe the heart shaped parcel of land that makes up Bulimba and Balmoral.

This painting extends from Tugulawa on the right, through to Humbug Reach in the Brisbane River, near New Farm Park and East Brisbane.

On the left side, there are 5 homes that were demolished or removed amid disputation to make way for the widening of Wynnum Rd in 2018. A traffic signal box (TSB) I painted and named Heritage Mourning sits near these houses. Completed in 2016, I was commenting on the destruction of the traditional essence of our inner city homes and so I painted the large Moreton Bay fig trees with black lace bands around their limbs, symbolising their selection for imminent destruction. Prophetically, 2 years later the view from this TSB was total annihilation of huge Mowbray Park trees and the Queenslanders that had graced Wynnum Rd for 100 years.

The painting also shows the ever changing city skyline, ferry stops and the Brisbane Powerhouse and Woolstores at Teneriffe.

This reproduction is an open edition for sizes up to 40cm x 60cm, and a limited run of 200 for sizes above 66cm x 100cm. Reproductions are made to order and are ready in approximately 10-14 days.

  • Spread along Shorncliffe shores, like a row of sentinels, Cottonwood tree form a protective stance against the oncoming salty sea winds. This artwork is a vibrant tapestry filled with intricate details like dogs, people, flying foxes and birds, each carefully painted to showcase their unique personalities.

  • The Colourbond Series are paintings of individual-style Queenslander homes, ranging from colonial worker's cottages, to triple gables Ashgrovian and Spanish-mission style, just to name a few. Each piece is so named because of the roof colour matching the Colorbond steel colours in Australia. Each artwork employs large areas of clashing foreground colour plains, a middle-ground house and the background suggesting the sub-tropical backyards and views beyond. Highly colourful, these works allowed me to place unlikely colour companions in a deliberately challenging way.
