Clare Riddington Jones
I am a Sydney born artist now living in Noosa. I have been painting for over 25 years and love to create contemporary textured landscape paintings and fluid abstract paintings, as well as floral and wildlife paintings. I paint in acrylic, mixed media and oils. I love to experiment and, in recent times, have painted in a combination of oil and cold wax, and have also taught Flow Art to my students. I am very fortunate to live in times with such diverse materials.
The Sunshine Coast is a wonderful inspiration for my seascapes, and my travels in the outback have also provided inspiration for my landscape paintings.
For five months every year I spend time at my property in Queenstown, New Zealand, where I am inspired by the wonderful alpine vista to create textured mountain paintings, and find my extensive garden to be a creative source for my floral artworks.
I’ve had many solo exhibitions both in Australia and New Zealand, and I also give workshops from my studio in Noosa.

This colourful impression of Lupins across the lake was inspired by the lupins growing in spring around the edges of Lake Wakatipu. This is a soft, textured impression of the misty mountains across the lake with the lupins in the foreground. It would blend with most decors and bring that lovely scene inside your home.

This small harmonious painting was inspired by my many hours of tramping in the mountains and fields around my home in Queenstown. During the summer the wildflowers are blooming all around the lake and fields. This pretty painting would give a sense of peace and harmony to any home.

This beautiful oil painting of a Rhododendron was inspired by the many lovely flowers in my garden. I picked this one, placed it on a lovely piece of red satin, and spent many hours painting it with buttery oils. It has a very soft harmonious feel to it. It is finished with many coats of archival varnish and is ready to hang.

If you have ever visited New Zealand’s south island you will be familiar with the majestic peaks and beautiful lakes, with the clouds misting through the valleys. This painting was inspired by my walks through the valleys near my home in Queenstown. The light is always changing and the misty clouds dissipating as the day warms up. I love to paint colourful scenes and to use my palette knife to give the impression of the rugged mountains. It would be a wonderful reminder of the amazing scenery and would look lovely on any wall.

This vibrant painting was inspired by the beautiful golden grasses and the hay bales I saw, as I was driving home one afternoon. The scene couldn’t have been better, with golden fields and the mountains in the background. I have used texture on the hay bales and a softer touch in the distance. It would be a very striking addition to any room. The painting is finished off with a beautiful black frame which brings out the colours.

This very textured impression of a Kea in flight over high mountains covered in snow and clouds, was inspired by the magnificent birds who fly around in the mountains of Queenstown. I love painting textured mountains and adding this lovely bird to the misty clouds hovering over the top of the mountains seemed the best way to portray these wonderful birds.

This very textured, colourful painting was inspired by the misty clouds which drift down amongst the mountain peaks and the change of colours on the mountains as the sun shifts during each day. It makes a dramatic scene and the painting would make quite a statement on any wall. It was created with many layers of soft colours and many palette knife strokes. You can see the different colours showing through the layers on the finished painting.

This semi-abstract painting was inspired by the beautiful trees on the edge of Lake Wakatipu at Wilsons Bay. The glimpse of mountains and lake between the shapely trees is a wonderful sight, and I used a fluid acrylic background and a textured foreground to depict this scene. It would be a very happy reminder of a visit to the beautiful area of Queenstown, or a permanent reminder for you if you are lucky enough to live in the area.

This is an abstract impression of the snow melting as the season changes from winter to spring. The tarns thaw and the mountains lose their winter look as the alpine flowers emerge and the grasses grow again.

This textured impression of the Remarkables was inspired on a day in autumn, when the clouds were misting in the hollows at the foot of the mountains. The beauty of the autumn colours has to be seen to be believed and this painting would bring that spectacle into your lounge room to constantly remind you of how beautiful it is before the leaves have fallen. The painting is varnished with three coats of archival varnish and is ready to hang.

I have often hiked (or tramped, if you are in NZ) in the high country and love looking down on hidden tarns with misty clouds all around. This is my impression of one of those hikes. The added beauty in spring is that the wild Thyme flowers on the hillsides give a lovely pinky/purple hue to the mountains. The painting has lots of harmonious colours, plenty of texture, and lots of dribbly marks which give the painting that fresh impressionist appeal. It would look lovely in any room.

My impression of the beautiful glow of sunset looking down Lake Wakatipu towards the head of the lake with all its lovely reflections. The painting is enhanced by the black frame surrounding it.

One of the lovely scenes here in Queenstown, NZ with the stream winding its way through the valley, with the mountains and clouds in the distance. It is a very harmonious painting which would suit most rooms. It is framed with a black floating frame.

This is a typical scene where people grow lavender. It could be here in NZ (where I saw it), or in France, or other countries where they grow lavender. This particular painting is an impression of the sun setting over the beautiful lavender fields and it would make a lovely addition to any room. It has texture and softness and a subtle colour. It has a lovely black frame to enhance the colours.
