  • I paint from my heart about how I feel and in this case, it's about the fish and how they too are suffering from human interference. The red bird is the symbol of both hope and warning. Its always good to remember that there are good things and good people on this planet too.

Large square oil painting on stretched canvas.
    White gesso edges.
    D rings and hanging wire.
    Certificate of Authenticity is provided.

  • I’m a potter and, like most potters, I love bowls of all kinds. There is something primal about a bow - it can carry food or medicine. These ones carry healing elixirs for the soul.
The painting is unframed, but it does have d rings and hanging wire, so you can stick it on the wall without a frame, but it would look pretty good in one.

  • I have a thing about coloured birds, red ones especially. The Firebird is a mythic bird, a portent of good fortune if treated well. These ones seem to have emerged from a magical bowl.

In Australia, we are so lucky to have many breathtaking coloured birds, and it's one of the things I love about living here. I could paint them, but I am not a realistic painter I am surrealist, and so I create whimsical images about things that intrigue me.

This little painting is a variation of a much bigger work that I sold a few years ago. The edges are gesso white.

  • Totem is a culmination of many dogs painted and some created in ceramic. This dog is venetian red and vermillion (evocative of the red cattle dog), and decorated with Pictish swirls. It moves towards you, with intense blue eyes, on its path forward. He is a powerful chap. Pretty sure he's a he.

  • These dogs are inspired by my Scottish roots, and hark back to the ancient carvings of animals found on standing stones all around the highlands. Dogs are everywhere in my work because they symbolise unconditional love and the archetypal energies of tenderness, fierceness and playfulness.

  • This is an interpretation of the Pictish Wolf, who/which is found carved into many of the ancient standing stones in the Scottish Highlands. I work from a basic outline, drawn anywhere between 800 and 1000 years ago, and reimagine it in three dimensional form. The drawing itself remains naive and primitive, conveying the energy of the pictoglyph.

The Picts, who were the original people populating much of Scotland back then, would draw marks to delineate the energy flow or powerful points on the body (shoulder, haunch). I love these marks and have used them before in many of my paintings. Recently however, I have begun to research these at a deeper level, so this is the first in a series of paintings using the ancient drawings as a foundation for the work.

A note about the colours - the background is deep blue/black. These are the trickiest colours to photograph due to the reflections.

  • In deep water is a figurative abstract expressionist work (blimey, that's a mouthful) about other worlds and symbolic of where we are at this stage of our evolution as humans. It's quirky, it's whimsical, it's other worldly and it is one I'm proud of.
Yes, I’ve been there and done that.

  • One of the joys of living near the ocean is being able to swim in it regularly. I have come to this delightful occupation relatively late in life. When the dreaded plague hit us a few years ago, all the pools, including the ocean pools, were closed and I realised the only thing I could do was to learn how to safely do ocean swimming. I am still a bit timid and I don't take on anything to rough or risky. The thrill of seeing the fish close up and feeling oneself being held by the ocean, is a marvellous thing.
This painting is inspired by it.

  • Unfinished business is a term often used in gestalt therapy to name an unresolved relationship dynamic. Every one of us has relationships that are unfinished in some way. The things we wish we had or hadn't said or done. Sometimes it's possible to resolve these within ourselves, even with people who have died or left in some other way. This painting is the beginning of that exploration.

  • A symbolic work about making choices with the higher good in mind. I don't mean to preach, it's more about myself. However, I know I am not alone in the experience - being human is very difficult at times.

How easy is to be mean, unkind and critical. How much harder it is to have compassion, forgiveness and a broader view. Here the angel calls to the higher path, even if it's hard.

  • Three Starry Dogs are whimsical representations of the clay animals I create, each reflecting the idea that we are interconnected with the cosmos. As inhabitants of this universe, we sometimes overlook the fact that our existence is sustained by our own celestial body, the sun or sol.

I often ponder the perspective of dogs. Do they cherish the sun, stars, moon, trees and sea as much as we do? I believe they do. This piece offers my unique interpretation of our shared interconnectedness.

Presently unframed and intentionally so, the artwork stands on its own. The edges are adorned with white gesso and the piece comes equipped with D rings and hanging wire, making it ready to be displayed.

  • Living by the sea provides endless inspiration for painting. Sometimes I take my tea down to the shore and enjoy just looking at the rocks, the water, the sky. There is something very soothing about the horizon line and the divide between the sky and sea.

If you love the sea too, but can't always be near it, this little painting will remind you of it's beauty and to take time to sit down with a cup of tea and take in the magnificence of nature wherever you are.

All materials used are of the highest professional quality including the frame which is beautifully made by Outside the Square, of Victorian Ash. You won't find better anywhere.

  • I live by the sea and I am so grateful that I do. ChilliDog used to love it too and we often go walking together along the rocks. Sometimes I stop to meditate and to silently say thank you to the sea, for it provides us with so much. Also, I enjoy ocean swimming and seeing all the fish and marine life, and for the ability to do this I am also very grateful. Thank you to the sea.

  • I've always been a dreamer, a daydreamer, a contemplative person and this painting comes from that place. You can see it on a couple of levels. Firstly, it is just a lovely, colourful, peaceful painting that reminds us to slow down and contemplate. The symbols of the dog (companionship), fire (warmth) water, mountains, evening star, about the potential future. The tree without leaves represents a time of rest and regeneration, and yet there is still growth of beautiful flowers.
It's a surreal and dreamy landscape both physically and mentally.

  • Continuing a theme of social comment about how addicted we are becoming to our smart phones. Anywhere you go, whether it's on the bus, train, plane, in the park, on the beach, almost everyone is attached to this little rectangle, oblivious to the immediate environment. You've got to admit, it's kind of spooky.

Purchasing from Susannah Paterson:

Shipping within Australia is included in my prices. Any painting under 105cm goes via Australia Post, while for bigger works I usually use Moving Art, a professional art courier. Be aware that they do take a little longer to deliver, but do a great job in ensuring the work doesn’t get damaged in transit.

For overseas shipping, I usually ask for an extra $150, depending on the size. I typically take the painting off the stretcher bars and send it rolled in a tube.

I am usually able to ship within a couple of days of receiving your order, unless I’m away, but I do like to get them off ASAP.

I do not offer framing, however some of my paintings are framed and that is clearly stated. If you would like to frame the work, I recommend Mobile Framing

I do not allow returns unless the painting is damaged in transit.
