Kim Lowry

Drawn to the shapes and shadows cast by contrasting sights and scenes, Kim Lowry’s works are a distinct merge of monochromatic and minimalistic imagery, infused with pop art and abstract rudimentary qualities. Enveloped equally by the concrete jungle and the organic environment of central Brisbane, her works pay homage to this idiosyncratic merge by depicting a combination of suspenseful city scapes and a diverse scope of florae species. Aiming to underscore the smaller segments of her subjects that may commonly be unnoticed or unseen, she frequently unveils the unembellished pleasures that can be derived from life’s diminutive moments.

Born and raised originally in the United Kingdom, Kim initially worked for a twelve-month period in Queensland’s far north, prior to settling permanently in Australia in 2012. After travelling extensively as a massage therapist, and residing in a number of countries as a consequence, her desire to change her career trajectory led her to a local art gallery, where she was encouraged to exhibit and develop her unparalleled style of visual artistry.

Highly disposed to photographing her surrounds, Kim customarily utilises the images she collates as references for her works. Manipulating these photographs digitally into non-representational renderings, she portrays them conceptually in acrylics on canvas. These particularly imaginative interpretations provide viewers pause, cognizance and moments of quiet and considered contemplation.

  • Amalgamating minimalism, pop art and abstract art forms, Kim Lowry’s works depict stirring and distinguishing perspectives of organic scenes and urban scapes. With a particular emphasis on the contrasts between light and shade, she delineates the distinct shapes and silhouettes of her subjects at close range. Surrounded by a meld of native bushland and the inner-city backdrop of Brisbane, it is often the minute aspects and modest pleasures of these locales that provide the catalyst and inspire the intentions behind her works.
