Jenni Armstrong

Jenni is an intuitive Australian artist whose work explores the quiet magic of the land and the emotional landscapes of the heart. Living in the Hunter region of New South Wales, she draws inspiration from the rolling hills, wildflowers, and the ever‑changing play of light and water in nature.

Jenni’s collections range from soft, impressionistic florals, to expressive abstracts and soulful landscapes. Painting for Jenni is a conversation with memory and emotion, with each layer a way of honouring the beauty of impermanence, grief and transformation. As she builds up her works, she lets them unfold naturally, often stepping back to see what’s emerging, and responding to what the painting wants next. Texture, layering and fine details come last, often added with oil pastels or a palette knife.

Jenni initially studied art at high school, before beginning her career as a nurse and spending many years living and travelling overseas. She began painting again in June 2023, first in oils and later in acrylics. She is entirely self-taught, having learnt by observing other artists and taking a few short courses online along the way.

Jenni has been a participant in the Incognito Art Show and had a painting selected for the Botanicals Exhibition at Newcastle Art Space. She is a member of Newcastle Artist Collective and has sold works through Gloucester Creatives, as well as completing commissioned paintings for members of the local Gloucester community. Each of these experiences has encouraged Jenni to continue to grow and share her work with a wider audience.

  • This piece began in boldness—hot pink, vivid green, deep purple. Layer by layer, those colours softened, transforming into something gentler, until the blossoms emerged. Sweet Cosmos holds that quiet magic of transformation, where strength turns to softness and beauty blooms from within.

  • Oil on canvas

  • Lily Radiance marks a turning point in my creative journey. Months of experimenting, layering and exploring oil’s rich textures finally came together in this vibrant, light-filled composition.

Inspired by the luminous greens of a sunlit pond and the delicate blush of waterlily petals, I worked with a palette knife and bold brushstrokes to build texture and movement. The thick, tactile layers invite you to almost feel the water’s surface — alive with ripples, reflections and quiet energy.

For me this painting is about emergence — the moment when something dormant within rises to meet the light. The lilies bloomed and so did I.

  • There is something profoundly beautiful about magnolias. Their blossoms appear on bare winter branches, long before any leaves return. That contrast – of a tree stripped right back, suddenly bursting with colour and life – became the inspiration for this painting. For me, it speaks of resilience, new beginnings, and the quiet beauty that can emerge when everything else has been pared away.

  • Inspired by the view from Kia Ora Lookout near Gloucester, NSW, this piece captures the rolling hills, wide open skies and the wildflowers dancing in the breeze. I wanted to express the sense of space, light and the quiet beauty of this landscape - a moment of stillness and connection with nature.

  • Afternoon Tide is an invitation to step into the shoreline—to feel the tide lapping around your feet, the sand shifting beneath, and the warmth of the afternoon sun on your skin.

It carries the scent of salt air, the shimmer of water dancing across rock pools, and the gentle hush of waves in the distance.

  • A quiet contemplative piece with a tender energy. Soft layers of dusky mauves, mossy greens and glimmers of light evoke the hush of a still water garden. • First Love is a soft layered and luminous expression of memory, painted in the quiet weeks after the loss of someone I once loved deeply. Created as part of my emotional healing, it helped me reconnect with what was true - not just the grief, but the beautiful memories we shared. This piece holds the tenderness of early love, along with the ache of what was lost. The layered brushwork suggests both romance and the first subtle cracks that time revealed. An intuitive abstract with personal depth, First Love speaks to anyone who has loved and lost, and still finds beauty in remembering.

  • Lineage reflects on the patterns and strengths we inherit, and the invisible threads that connect us across time. The golden marks suggest a backbone - a symbol of resilience and support - while the dotted lines evoke beads on a string, representing memory, connection, and the stories that bind one life to another. This piece speaks to heritage, belonging and the beauty of what endures.

  • A celebration of golden light and botanical simplicity, Echinacea Glow captures the moment when late afternoon sun softens and deepens - making petals blush and the whole garden hum with warmth. Echinacea - beloved for its healing qualities and simple form - are rendered in glowing yellows, earthy greens and soft violets.
